Daytrotter session

We're all complicated, aren't we, even when we're being base? We
would like to fancy ourselves as being the onions that we strive to be,
with layer upon layer, usually never peeled, usually never discovered
for all of the different ones. They might not be seen, but we can feel
then, prominently - like the grain of sand shifting in the bottom of our
shoe that feels like a jagged rock, two inches in diameter.

We're
all these things and we're nothing, if they're not appreciated. We
imagine that we're older than we are, more refined and complex than
we're given credit for, when we don't know a thing yet. We still feel
like we haven't aged a bit when we're grandparents, appalled when we
look down at our arms and see the liver spots, or when we look at
ourselves in the mirror and we just look too old to possibly function.

Josephine
Oniyama, a singer and songwriter who performs under just her first
name, is captivated by these variations and incarnations of ourselves
that we can define and differentiate so easily, but which are so related
to one another. These are the false identities and those that one would
like to shake or destroy - knocking them out of the directory. Her
soulful and scorching singing style makes you question who you are, or
who you're trying to be today.

You wonder if it's worth it. You
wonder if you're doing something wrong, or if you're supposed to feel a
different way, behaving the way you are. You wonder if others are
finding your act appropriate, or agreeable, or just believable. You
realize, as she sings, that we're all works in progress and we're all
editing - in the mode of continual revisions. She sings, "How would I
know if I'm a portrait of the person I'm supposed to be," on the
brilliant "Portrait," revealing the uncertainty of character as seen by
others, as massaged or rejected by others. So many hours are spent -
maybe lost - to these productions, to the deciphering of others and to
ignoring that most of them are buttered, most of them are slippery. Most
of them are cooked, but they're here for a reason. It's just unclear
what that reason is for the longest time, as it should be.

http://www.daytrotter.com/#!/concert/josephine/20056210-37383388

Josephine featured on MTV Iggy

Name: Josephine Oniyama, known as Josephine

Where she’s from: Manchester, UK

When she started: Debut album released in 2012.

Genre: Folk soul

Most Similar: Nina Simone, The Marvelettes

Sounds Like: A great big hug.

Josephine’s voice is a truly rare gem. The Manchester native (borne
of Liberian and Jamaican parents) doesn’t sing in the pop, show-off,
million-octave diva soul voice standard we all live by. Rather, she is a
contralto, which means that — while she has an impressive range — she
sings in the deepest female vocal range on the classical scale. The
sound that winds up emanating from this petite rising star is an
all-powerful feminine force; comforting and wizened, yet utterly
heartwrenching and vulnerable at the same time. Even during her happy
songs, you’ll want to cry. Even if you’re a dictator.

Though I could write novels about, and build monuments to, this
woman’s voice, there’s also lots of interesting stuff going on in the
music that’s worth noting. Her new album Portrait is a
light-footed stroll through Motown, 60s folk, soul, Afrobeat, and
indie-pop. Sometimes, it even sounds as if there’s a great big spotlight
on Josephine as she croons a climactic ballad from a Broadway stage.

Thankfully, I’m not the only one in my Josephine worship. She recently appeared on Jools Holland, and is now touring the UK with The Noisettes.

Check out her track “Original Love” off her debut album Portrait for a hint, but be sure to visit her Soundcloud to get the full picture. It’s insanely worth it.

http://www.mtviggy.com/articles/uks-josephine-and-the-voice-that-could-topple-dictators/

Josephine BBC review

  Al Fox 2012-10-05

Often,
the term ‘timeless’ only really functions in hindsight. But
occasionally, something comes to the fore that transcends any concept of
now, then or otherwise.

One such example is the debut album for 29-year-old Manchester native Josephine Oniyama – or, for recording purposes, just plain Josephine. She manages the
rare feat of creating something both novel and nostalgic, yet with an
identity entirely its own.

A mere couple of bars into Portrait, and a pretty clear statement is
delivered: the voice is very much the leader here, and everything else
follows obediently. Vocally, Josephine is old beyond her years,
possessing a rich, classical tone normally reserved for ancient,
crackling vinyl. Even her cut-glass pronunciation has a peculiar Miss
Jean Brodie quality to it, yet somehow offers a tender, inviting
attribute concurrently.

The refined production builds around her, with playful folksiness and
flecks of warm, accessible jazz. The subtle references to her West
African heritage are pleasing too: the joyfully plonky percussion
cheekily peeking out from under the neo-soul surface on Original Love,
or the skeletal, breathy beats of I Think It Was Love. But for the most
part, Manchester is a more palpable reference, the unaffected scent of
northern soul permeating every note.

What A Day, in contrast, steps furthest from the niche Portrait works hard to carve, displaying an Amy Macdonald-style,
demi-country twang. But it’s very much a one-off visit, and beyond
that, it’s hard to hear anything other than Josephine on Josephine’s
terms.

Tonally, it’s a leisurely, dignified collection, yet stretches to
little over half an hour. That makes for an effective listen – where
Portrait sets itself up to be a relaxing, protracted affair, the musical
box melancholy of House of Mirrors provides a charming conclusion. And
it doesn’t leave you feeling short-changed; moreover, it piques
curiosity for Josephine’s next chapter.

A pigeonhole-obsessed media will have a hard time finding any fitting
sound-alikes in today’s market, and such a mature, elegant guise will
have many scratching their heads. But by and large, that’s probably
testament to what a unique prospect Josephine is.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/music/reviews/rxb6

You ask?

I'm a fucking asshole.
Jose Gonzalez & Tinariwen - a one-off joint headline show at The Shepherds Bush Empire

You’ve got to be doing something right when you can count amongst
your fans the likes of Thom Yorke, Brian Eno, Carlos Santana or TV On
The Radio. Formed in rebel training camps in Libya, these exiled
nomads-turned-rockstars of the Sahara have become the soundtrack for
Touareg independence and reconciliation, combining traditional Touareg
melodies with Malian, Western, Berber and Arabic influences to create
spare, evolving, hypnotic grooves. As if Keith Richards, Santana, John
Lee Hooker, various members of Primal Scream, Mogwai and the Grateful
Dead had got lost in the Sahara for a decade and then returned as a
fully-fledged desert band.

José González, whose family fled their Argentinian homeland bound
for Sweden when the military Junta came into power, provides a perfect
counterpoint to the hypnotic relentlessness of Tinariwen’s grooves.
Being exposed to latin-american melodies from an early age and drawing
from the idiosyncrasies of Scandinavian folk José González’s music is a
unique hybrid which takes the best of both worlds. Both poignantly
beautiful and subtly warm, José González will win over your heart and
mind.

Concerts don’t get any better than this. Two hugely reknowned acts
come together for the first and only time tonight at The Shepherd’s
Bush Empire for a very, very special show. Be there

O2 Shepherd's Bush Empire

Tickets: £19.50 Early Birds, £27.50 Advance:

http://www.gigjunkie.net/gigs/Tinariwen-and-Jose-Gonzalez/O2-Shepherds-Bush-Empire/03-May-2012/561859

A Journey - Exclusive fashion shoot & interview

Charlene Soraia is a stunning mix, part
British, part Italian and part Indian with a beautifully flawless face
and a mane of thick hair. (She’s often asked where she bought her hair
from, but they’re not extensions, it’s the ‘part Indian’ bit). When we
met Charlene it was clear to see that music is like her second skin.
Like we inhale and exhale a breath, Charlene sings. Whether it’s
quietly to herself or almost under her breath, she fills every silence
with a la-di-da or instinctive melody – and it’s completely mesmerizing.

Far from being your average music artist, she finished her debut album ‘Moonchild’ over two years ago after releasing 3 EPs on her own label. “I
made 3 EPs, 1000 copies of each. I printed out everything myself, cut
out each cover myself and put them all together. I did all 3000 myself!” Certainly no newbie to the music scene, it’s her recent cover of The Calling’s ‘Wherever You Will Go’
for the Twinings advert that has rocketed her in to the limelight.
ACCESS-FASHION heard the song, shared it on our blog and by the time we
clicked on the iTunes charts she was number 13 and has so far peaked at
number 3 (Official UK charts). The release of ‘Moonchild‘ was scheduled for 2012 but was brought forward to this week (November 21st 2011) due to demand.

Charlene is cute, quirky, sweet and
hilarious. At her album launch in London’s Bush Hall, her first
headline gig since the ‘Twinings’ moment, Charlene referred to herself
as, “Always the bridesmaid and never the bride,” at gigs. “Usually
I’m saying thanks for having me to an audience that would really like
me to hurry up and piss off so they can hear the act they’ve paid to
see… This time you’re here to see me and I don’t know what to say.
Thank you so much for coming down.” The event was sold out and yes
everyone was there to see Charlene Soraia – so here’s hoping she gets
used to it, as it’s all change from now.

She’s an artist who loves the sound of
music. An odd sentence it may seem with no reference to the Rodgers and
Hammerstein musical, but whilst shooting she told us, “I love analogue sound. That’s how I made my album. I like to create the sounds myself, nothing over compressed. Nothing fake.”
She took to the stage with four guitars, her amp, her pedals and her
voice. Her music is packed with sounds she creates so effortlessly,
elegantly and gracefully, one of the reasons we adore her. It’s clear
that she isn’t led by a team of people telling her how to speak or what
to speak about (one of the pros of coming from a small independent
record label perhaps?). But oh boy did she speak her mind, humming,
swearing and meowing her thoughts aloud to the audience between songs.
She’s a humorous soul with songs like ‘Bipolar,’ which has the line “I’m bipolar and nobody knows it but me.’ She talks the audience through a song titled, ‘Does she fake her cum face?’ No, we’re really not kidding… (You had to be there). But there’s nothing fake about the girl behind the humorous character and witty lyrics. Charlene Soraia’s Moonchild is beautiful body of work. Although female singer / songwriters seem in
abundance, few display the talent, charisma and character that we have
been introduced to.

See the beautiful fashion shoot here:

http://access-fashion.com/2011/11/charlene-soraia-a-journey/

Chart News

Charlene Soraia’s single, ‘Wherever You Will Go (featured on the current Twinings TV ad), continued its ascent up the UK Official Singles Chart landing the No. 7 spot this weekend. It certainly has momentum as it continues to climb the iTunes singles chart, now comfortably owning the No. 3 spot.
Whilst many will appreciate Charlene’s beautiful voice on ‘Wherever You Will Go’, it is worth noting that she is a highly accomplished guitarist. Born in Sydenham to hardcore hippy parents, Charlene first picked up a guitar at the tender and impressionable age of 5.
Charlene’s love of the guitar is influenced by the experimental sounds of 60’s psychedelia, intricate jazz guitarists and deep love of prog rock. She has developed a distinctive fret flexing style that is incredible to listen to and mesmerizing to watch. She will be performing live on the following dates:

Nomi Ruiz (Jessica 6) interview on Diapo France

Who are you Nomi Ruiz? For how long have you been singing? How do you define your music?

I've been singing since before i could speak in full sentences. I would define my music as soul/pop.

Since 2009, you collaborate
with Morgan Wiley and Andrew Raposo and you are known as Jessica 6. Can
you say some words about this part of your life?

I love the beauty of collaboration.
This is what Jessika 6 represents to me. It's music that will only
exist when Andrew, Morgan and I get together and free ourselves in the
creative process.

The record "White Horse" is as much languishing as releasing. What is it talking about?

"White Horse" is about indulgence.
About feeling free by losing yourself in the night life and about the
strengh as well as consequence of those actions.

On the stage, videos, pictures...you always look sexy and enchantress. Is it an important face of nomi ruiz 's character?

Definitely. It's also a part of who i
am outside my work. I love to exaggerate feminity. I feel empowered by
feminine energy and push that through sexuality and fashion.

A Jessica 6's album is in process...So can you reveal some of the aspects which will make the album's music?

The album is called "See The Light" and
is a journey through various flavors of pop music. It goes from dance
to r&b, new jack swing to soul and psychedelia. The lyrical content
is very personal to me. Like a diary of the past 2 years of my life.

Your appearances in Fun Girl
and White Horse 's video shot are really strange and mysterious. What
kind of environment would you like to express in next videos?

I would love to incorporate more dancing and choreography in the next video.

I have been in NYC last year...living just closed to the Brooklyn Museum. For you, what is the best place in NYC?

I love the neighborhood i grew up in,
Sunset Park. It's the perfect place to go shopping for something sexy
then get some great latin food, walk through the park and enjoy a view
of the entire new York City skyline.

What is the best club for dancing?

Cielo on Sunday's when Honey Dijon is Djing

Do u like contemporary art and performance art?

I love photography and video work as well as art installations.

Which artists do you love?

I am lucky to have many close friends
who are amazing artists such as Haluk Akakce, Antony Hegarty, Bianca
Cassidy, Alice O' Mally.

Which vocalists do you love?

I love Nina Simone, Donny Hathaway, Dusty Springfield, Ray LaMontagne, Adèle, Amy Winehouse.

You spent one year with Hercules and Love Affair. What could you tell us about this experience...

It was amazing being on so many stages and performing for so many people.

You already came to Paris as i
learnt watching a video of you on a bridge. Did you love your trip?
What do you think of the city?

It's such a beautiful city! I love
walking around at night when you can get lost in all the sexy neon
lights. Also has the best lingerie shopping as well as my favorite
dessert...the banana/nutella crêpe.

What about french music artists?

Les nubians.

Now, what is the next step?

More tourning. Playing bigger and better shows all time and always creating more music for the world.

An interview by Mehdi Brit

http://www.revue-diapo.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=301:nomi-ruiz-jessika-6&catid=64:session-2&Itemid=168

Little Dragon Gypsy Woman on Stereogum...

“You guys wanna hear a club classic?” is how Little Dragon’s Yukimi
Nagano launches into a cover of “Gypsy Woman (She’s Homeless).” The
track is in fact a club classic, inescapable over the past 21 years,
and it’s fitting hearing it sung by the voice of 2011′s most
inescapable club track, “Wildfire” with SBTRKT (and, for that matter, Drake).
So below, you’ll get Little Dragon covering Crystal Waters’s 1990
classic and, as bonus, an MP3 of the Drumma Boy (feat. Shabazz Palaces)
remix of Little Dragon’s SBTRKT track. Seeing as Little Dragon is the
nexus of this post, you can also head over to Modular for the band’s eight-track Modcast, a mixtape they made for the Aussie label that will get you further in their headspace. (Or at least, their headphones.)

http://stereogum.com/781582/little-dragon-make-a-mix-cover-crystal-waters/mp3s/

Little Dragon on Dazed Digital

The Swedish electronic quartet, Little Dragon return with their third album featuring straightforward catchy pop
tunes, continuing their usual trippy sound and dreamy dance-oriented
vibes. Their “Ritual Union” LP, released in July, featured their first
single, “Nightlight”,
before they played Glasto this summer despite their hatred of mud and
bad English weather. Here we speak to the eccentric foursome about
their latest sounds and Scandinavian origins.

Dazed Digital: You've worked with other Sweden-based artists
like José Gonzalez, does Gothenburg have a great density of musicians
per square metre?
Erik Bodin: Yeah, me and Yukimi used to play with him.
Yukimi Nagano: Percussion and background vocals. We were more like…
Erik Bodin: … Musical slaves (laughs)
Fredrik Källgren Wallin: In Gothenburg there's a lot of people making music, more than we know I guess.
Erik Bodin: It's kind of isolated. People don't really mingle.

DD: Would you say that your Swedish origins have influenced your music in anyway?
Yukimi Nagano: Maybe
in a very abstract deep hidden way. The music is all written here in
Gothenburg... So I would say it's more the Gothenburg origin that
spiced it the way it sound.

DD: Erik wears a The Radio Dept. cap, are you in touch with them?
Erik Bodin: Oh, Fredrik introduced them to us. He stole a sweater from them.
Fredrik Källgren Wallin: It wasn't like that (laughs). We were in the same apartment when living in Malmö, they were recording there.

DD: Arguably Ritual Union has been your most successful
album to date, how have you developed your sound from your last 2009
release?
Yukimi Nagano: It's
like a continuation from the other two but maybe more raw and simple.
Yukimi is a big part of the new sound. It's very vocally driven.

DD:
You’ve recently collaborated with SBTRKT on his latest album; How did
Wildfire come about and why did you think your combination was a good
fit?
Yukimi Nagano: We've
known about each other for quite a while now. He did a nice remix under
another name some years ago. When he reached out and sent some beats to
choose from we thought that the wildfire beat would be fun to play
with. And so we did.

DD: What was it like on the Gorillaz' world tour?
Yukimi Nagano: The experience of playing in those kind of spaces. That was just a
challenge for us. Of course, to be a part of that whole group of so
many artists that we admire and we're inspired by. Me and Fred we were
there as guests of part of the Gorillaz's show in the US part. It's
like a big town on the road.
Erik Bodin: We were playing ping-pong with Damon, he was playing his little game for every show, after sound check sometimes.

DD: A few of your songs have appeared on TV adverts, how do you feel about commercialising music?
Erik Bodin: “Fortune” was in a chocolate commercial in Sweden and also in the film
“The Kids are Alright”. Commercialising music for us sometimes is weird
in a way, but commercials is a way to spread the music.
Yukimi Nagano: It depends on what it is. There are things like McDonald's which is not
interesting. You have to look at it from many different perspectives. I
guess you can always do something else with the money you get from it.
Fredrik Källgren Wallin: Chocolate makes people happy. (laughs)

DD: Where will we see Little Dragon in the future?
Yukimi Nagano: Hopefully
in the studio making more music but before that it will be everywhere
from LA, Probably South America, Texas, Atlanta, New York, Glasgow,
Pukkelpop, Copenhagen and Sydney!

http://www.dazeddigital.com/music/article/10614/1/little-dragon-roars

HMV exclusive bundle offer on Little Dragon's Ritual Union

2011 saw Little Dragon start the year off with a headlining tour of the
U.S. and a performance on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon in March, thanks
to a recommendation from superfan Questlove of The Roots.

In May, Little Dragon appeared on the track “Just Don’t” from Raphael
Saadiq’s Stone Rollin’, a record some are already calling the album of
the year. Big Boi and DJ Shadow called to invite the group to work on
new music.

This July they released Ritual Union, an album which finds
futuristic trance like rhythms mixed with the soulful vibes of their
debut LP colliding with the more upfront and danceable sounds of
Machine Dreams. Lead single “Nightlight” sounds like a fevery
hallucination in the dessert of sahara. “Brush The Heat,” is a
dancefloor detonator with the most infectious cowbells since Jay-Z told
us about his “99 Problems.”

While their recordings are always impressive, it is in the live
setting where the Dragon really comes alive. As if straight out of
central casting, every Little Dragon show seems to bring out an
unlikely mix of hip-hop heads in fitted caps, ravers, stoners, hipster
kids, hippies, old goats ,middles aged panthers and studious musician
types. “I think that’s kind of ideal,” Yukimi says of Little Dragon’s
eclectic fanbase. “That’s how, if I wished for a crowd, I would want
it.” And no doubt, if that crowd could invent a band, Little Dragon is
what they’d come up with.

AGE RESTRICTIONS Ruby Lounge, Manchester: Strictly 18+

Thekla, Bristol: Strictly 18+

Concorde2 Brighton: Strictly 18+

Buy tickets here:

http://www.hmvtickets.com/events/1586?utm_source=email

Little Dragon I-D session now live

Unleashing their eighth single and third album earlier this year, Gothenburg four piece Little Dragon have been about for a bit. Despite always upholding an excellent
standard of play, only recently have audiences begun to take a vested
interest in them. Making music which is representative of where they
are at and what they are up to, Yukimi (vocals), Erik Bodin (drums),
Fredrik Källgren Wallin (bass) and Håkan Wirenstrand (keyboards) have
been mates since high school. Creating laid back electonic tracks, all
written whilst the crew were hanging around down town and growing-up,
the Dragon’s staccato, upbeat sound is amusing, entertaining and
experimental. Crafting summer beats perfect for lazing or raving,
Little Dragon’s choruses are infectious, underlaid by progressive,
infectious riddims and led by Yukimi’s yummy, soulful vocals. The
daughter of two open-minded parents, growing up heavily influenced by
her mother’s love of playing piano, Yukimi possesses the kind of stage
presence that feels entirely personable and full of personality. She
sweats, she smiles and man, can she wail.

Now signed to Peacefrog and heavily backed by every credible critic
out there, Little Dragon have collaborated with an eclectic array of
artists, including SBTRKT,
TV on The Radio, Jose Gonzalez and Gorillaz. Probably somewhere over
the Atlantic right now, the band are in the middle of an international
tour which takes them from San Fran to Poland, over to Sweden, back to
Belgium across to Australia before bringing them back to Old Blighty.
Blimey. Selling out the majority of gigs they book, eternally upbeat
even when up against it, the band won over the Boiler Room crowds at
Corsica a couple of weeks back and their latest release ‘Ritual Union’
has secured itself a place on every credible mixtape and playlist over
the past couple of months. i-D online took time out with Yukimi to chat
past, future and present victories. Unleash the dragon.

http://i-donline.com/2011/08/i-n-session-little-dragon/

Little Dragon 'Ritual Union' 6 Music album of the day!!

Album three finds the Swedish electo-indie quartet rightfully breaking the mainstream.

It’s been a stellar year for Little Dragon, and it seems the torch paper of wider acceptance has truly been lit. Collaborations with Gorillaz and David Sitek, celebrity fans in Big Boi and ?uestlove,
and a burgeoning broadsheet love-in: three is definitely proving to be
the magic number as the Sweden-based four-piece ready their third LP.
With no shortage of charm, the band should ease their way into many an
audience’s affections.

From the opening chimes of title-track, Ritual Union is an
effortless exercise in economics. Nothing is wasted nor added
needlessly for effect, and it’s an album that revels in clean, crisp
production. Driven by skittering percussion and an impressive BPM
heartbeat, this set could feel cold and mechanical; but even with an
electronic influence stamped throughout, there’s a sense of craft and
warmth, largely owing to Little Dragon’s enduring attention to detail
and members’ session musician past. It’s these lovingly constructed
backdrops that give Shuffle a Dream mass pop appeal; Crystalfilm its
seductive, honeyed melodies; and Summertearz its offbeat, tribal lilt.
Then there’s Yukimi Nagano’s
husky-yet-girlish vocal, a constant highlight in its own right, weaving
amidst shape-shifting passages of minimal funk, dreamy pop and electro
soul, adding a pleasantly saccharine topping to an already satisfying
LP.

But perhaps what’s most satisfying is that, much like Little
Dragon’s slow-burning career, Ritual Union is so wonderfully
unassuming. There’s no signature statements; no desperation to blow you
away in the opening few tracks before settling into an album of
mediocrity and mundane fillers. Instead, it serves up numbers like the
sumptuous pleading of Please Turn; the TVOTR-do-dubstep of Precious; and the sparse experimentation of Brush the Heat, a cut that would have Jamie xx purring.

And it’s this uncompromising consistency, masked by the band’s
playful imagination and born from an unerring commitment to their art,
which makes Ritual Union so rewarding. This band’s gradual edging over
the precipice of mainstream acceptance has been richly deserved; now,
everyone should hear this dragon roar.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/music/reviews/jq9p

Little Dragon in Esquire in the US

There are no guitars in Little Dragon's "Ritual Union."
Driven instead by a snare drum and the fluttering of synthesized burps
and bubbles, the song is what happens when a modern band builds
something new out of the American soul tradition, embracing highlights
instead of merely aping it (e.g., the overly polite and, oddly enough,
also guitar-free, Motown-by-the-numbers "MoneyGrabber" from Fitz & the Tantrums).
Or perhaps we're simply hearing an outsider's perspective on R&B:
Little Dragon are Swedes led by a Swedish-Japanese-American frontwoman,
Yukimi Nagano. Or maybe we're hearing bits and pieces of what they've
learned working with high-profile, eccentric collaborators like Gorillaz, TV on the Radio's Dave Sitek, ?uestlove, and Raphael Saadiq. If somebody were to ask you what Little Dragon sounds like, your only reasonable answer would be Prince. (Despite the lack of guitars.)

Read more:

http://www.esquire.com/features/music/little-dragon-ritual-union-review-0811

Little Dragon song of the day on NPR

Compared to the output of other European nations, Swedish pop
actually makes it across the Atlantic in significant numbers. When it
does reach the U.S., it often doesn't take long before it's embraced by
listeners of all kinds. The country's latest contribution is Little
Dragon, a band whose newly acquired buzz was built in increments, one
collaboration at a time.

There was the guest spot on Gorillaz's Plastic Beach and a yet-to-be-heard studio session with Big Boi, among others, so it's no surprise that the group sounds so confident in "NightLight," the first single from the upcoming Ritual Union.

Little
Dragon makes pop music for folks who think they hate pop music, and one
important trick when attempting such a feat is to make the melody sound
more complex than it is. The hook in "NightLight" is carved out of a
couple of stiff keyboard chords, which don't quite fit together but
still fall neatly into place on the 4/4 beat. They might be the
unexpected visitors Yukimi Nagano sings about, the ones who are
"turning and twisting to form a line." Her lithe vocals sync up with
the song's electric undercurrent, providing the spark in a dance number
which might otherwise seem suited for a dilapidated disco hall.

http://www.npr.org/2011/07/13/137818751/little-dragon-dance-pop-with-a-spark?ft=1&f=4703895&sc=tw&utm_source=twitterfeed&utm_medium=twitter

SPIN - 24 Summer albums that matter most!

The Skinny: As a rule, it's wise to pay attention to dragons of
pretty much any size or nationality, but this Little Dragon from Sweden
is especially significant. The group has made some noteworthy friends
while bubbling up in the past few years, among them Damon Albarn from
Gorillaz, Dave Sitek from TV on the Radio, and someone in the music
department at Grey's Anatomy, who liked Little Dragon enough to
use their breakout song "Twice." At the core of all that admiration is
an alternately propulsive and delicate sound dictated by strains of
electro and the striking vocal coo of Yukimi Nagano, none of which is
likely to be dialed down on their third album Ritual Union.

Fast Fact: Frontwoman Nagano, born in Sweden to a Japanese
father and an American mother, evidently has something of a temper
despite her quietude otherwise -- hence the nickname Little Dragon.

http://www.spin.com/gallery/spins-24-summer-albums-matter-most?page=19#main

RCRD LBL - East West Funk

It’s been a minute since we broke down the origins of nu-disco’s brightest act, so here's a refresher. Jessica 6—named for a Logan’s Run reference and composed of former members of Hercules & Love Affair—has
incited silky smooth dance parties (likely followed by tender
baby-making sessions) for about three years now, despite the absence of
a proper LP. Their sound is so rich and hypnotic, they could probably
keep us waiting another three without complaint, but instead they've
chosen to reward fans of funky by releasing their debut, See The Light, as well as “East West Funk”—a b-side gift of bongos, bass, and fly-ass disco fusion. Much appreciated, guys.

http://rcrdlbl.com/2011/06/07/premiere_jessica_6_east_west_funk

Complex interview

Little Dragon’s lead singer talks Prince, her bad temper, and baby-making music.

This feature appears in Complex's June/July 2011 issue.

Swedish band Little Dragon is reportedly named after its petite
Swedish-Japanese lead singer Yukimi Nagano’s temper, and all of her
fire-breathing moods are on full display with their third record, Ritual Union,
out in July. Think ’80s vintage Prince at his horniest, fronted by
Björk, and you’ll get an idea of the band’s funked-up and odd sound.
Sticking to their all-synths, no-guitar policy, the record is sure to
be your sultry summer soundtrack. Or at least it’ll be the shit your girl plays to explain why she’s breaking up with you.

Do you even have ugly people in Sweden?
[Laughs.] I think everyone here is beautiful.

You’ve talked before about how Prince was a big influence. What do you make of him censoring all of his old dirty songs?
I have not really listened that much to his recent stuff. I didn’t know that he stopped singing those songs, actually.

He’s gone Jehovah, so he’s not allowed to talk about sex anymore.
I think that’s a shame.

What’s your favorite dirty Prince song?
I don’t know which songs are classified as really dirty ones, but I like “If I Was Your Girlfriend.”

So does the name of your band really come from your bad temper?
It’s
a funny way to put it, but it sort of came out that way. It was
something that the guys called me once in Sweden, and we liked it as a
band name. I have definitely had my fits in the studio.

Little Dragon’s music touches on a lot of different
emotions. What music would you put on in the bedroom when you’re trying
to set the mood?
Not Al Green, that’s too much of a cliché, but I’ll probably put on something strong and weird. Some Brian Eno.

Has anyone confessed to conceiving a baby to your music?
Not
necessarily confessed to that, but I have heard people say that their
girlfriend called them up and broke up with them and played “Twice.” I
have heard more of that, actually, than people making love.

You have blood on your hands!

WATCH THE BEHIND-THE-SCENES VIDEO:

http://www.complex.com/music/2011/05/little-dragon-yukimi-nagano-hot-complex-gallery

But Jessica 6 is first and foremost a house act,
with Ruiz’s lush, androgynous vocals soaking up the beat on standouts
“Fun Girl” and “White Horse,” in which Ruiz beckons, “Let me see you
dance.” Not a problem. “Good To Go” slams on the brakes, a slow,
candlelit jam that that would make Sade blush. —Caroline Seghers

http://www.blackbookmag.com/article/may-music-reviews-okkervil-river-fleet-foxes-cults/25808

Independent 5 star review

José González & the Gothenburg String Theory, Barbican, London

*****

José González is all too often done a disservice: his magnificent cover of The
Knife's "Heartbeats" launched him into the collective consciousness, and his
wondrous versions of songs from Massive Attack to Bruce Springsteen have
since captured the ears of many a casual listener. What's usually overlooked
is the musical brilliance of the man himself, but tonight, playing with
"maverick orchestra" the Gothenburg String Theory, it's never in doubt.

The orchestra, often the hallmark of overproduced, saccharine pseudo-pop
ballads, is a dangerous weapon in the musical arsenal. When incorporated
well, though, as it is tonight, it can be tremendous.

The Argentinian-Swedish folk songwriter and the GST have managed to conjure a
truly wonderful relationship. González's fragile vocals are counterbalanced
by his agile fingers, making his solo renditions of the pleading "Fold" and
absorbing "Hints" utterly beguiling. But it's when the GST emerge that the
show takes on another dimension.

Led by dynamic conductor Nackt, the intrepid orchestra embrace the unorthodox
– using plastic bags for percussion in "Far Away" – the contemporary and the
traditional, combining electronic background noises with luscious string
arrangements and insistent brass. They provide scope on "The Nest", and
match the vocal ebbs and swells of "Crosses" like musical shadows. The
performance of Kylie Minogue's "Hand on Your Heart" is breathtaking,
González's tremulous vocals and GST's rich orchestral texture uniting to
heartfelt effect.

The audience is rapt throughout, whether clapping their hands to the
triumphant climax of "Down the Line" or marvelling at the tear-inducing
wonder of "Heartbeats". Mixing spectral beauty with gifted musicianship,
this is a special partnership which isn't just impressive, it's progressive.

http://www.independent.co.uk/arts-entertainment/music/reviews/jos-gonzlez-amp-the-gothenburg-string-theory-barbican-london-2269981.html

RBMA Radio

In the mid 90s Little Dragon members Yukimi, Fredrick and Erik met at
high school in Gothenburg, Sweden. After hanging out and performing
together for several years they were joined by keyboardist Håkan
Wirenstrand. The band then decided to move in together to a space near
Gothenburg Central Station known only as the The Seal Colonie (due to
the legend that anyone who lived there would eventually turn into
seals) and the foundations of Little Dragon were created. Fusing
electronic sounds with their love of r&b, Little Dragon released
their genre-hopping first album via Peacefrog Recordings in 2007. For
their second album the group decided to up the tempo, and the
subsequent digital soul sounds they created became 'Machine Dreams'.
With the release of this sophomore album the group caught the attention
of Damon Albarn, and were asked to collaborate with Gorillaz on two
tracks for their 2010 album 'Plastic Beach'. Little Dragon blend catchy
melodies with their trademark electro soul style to create a sound that
makes them stand out from the dreary manufactured pop of today's
saturated market. If you don't believe the hype take a listen for
yourself, but remember there is no smoke without fire.

http://redbullmusicacademyradio.com/shows/3693/
