We're
all these things and we're nothing, if they're not appreciated. We
imagine that we're older than we are, more refined and complex than
we're given credit for, when we don't know a thing yet. We still feel
like we haven't aged a bit when we're grandparents, appalled when we
look down at our arms and see the liver spots, or when we look at
ourselves in the mirror and we just look too old to possibly function.

Josephine
Oniyama, a singer and songwriter who performs under just her first
name, is captivated by these variations and incarnations of ourselves
that we can define and differentiate so easily, but which are so related
to one another. These are the false identities and those that one would
like to shake or destroy - knocking them out of the directory. Her
soulful and scorching singing style makes you question who you are, or
who you're trying to be today.

You wonder if it's worth it. You
wonder if you're doing something wrong, or if you're supposed to feel a
different way, behaving the way you are. You wonder if others are
finding your act appropriate, or agreeable, or just believable. You
realize, as she sings, that we're all works in progress and we're all
editing - in the mode of continual revisions. She sings, "How would I
know if I'm a portrait of the person I'm supposed to be," on the
brilliant "Portrait," revealing the uncertainty of character as seen by
others, as massaged or rejected by others. So many hours are spent -
maybe lost - to these productions, to the deciphering of others and to
ignoring that most of them are buttered, most of them are slippery. Most
of them are cooked, but they're here for a reason. It's just unclear
what that reason is for the longest time, as it should be.

Josephine’s voice is a truly rare gem. The Manchester native (borne
of Liberian and Jamaican parents) doesn’t sing in the pop, show-off,
million-octave diva soul voice standard we all live by. Rather, she is a
contralto, which means that — while she has an impressive range — she
sings in the deepest female vocal range on the classical scale. The
sound that winds up emanating from this petite rising star is an
all-powerful feminine force;  comforting and wizened, yet utterly
heartwrenching and vulnerable at the same time. Even during her happy
songs, you’ll want to cry. Even if you’re a dictator.

Though I could write novels about, and build monuments to, this
woman’s voice, there’s also lots of interesting stuff going on in the
music that’s worth noting. Her new album Portrait is a
light-footed stroll through Motown, 60s folk, soul, Afrobeat, and
indie-pop. Sometimes, it even sounds as if there’s a great big spotlight
on Josephine as she croons a climactic ballad from a Broadway stage.

Thankfully, I’m not the only one in my Josephine worship. She recently appeared on Jools Holland, and is now touring the UK with The Noisettes.

Far from being your average music artist, she finished her debut album ‘Moonchild’ over two years ago after releasing 3 EPs on her own label. “I
made 3 EPs, 1000 copies of each. I printed out everything myself, cut
out each cover myself and put them all together. I did all 3000 myself!” Certainly no newbie to the music scene, it’s her recent cover of The Calling’s ‘Wherever You Will Go’
for the Twinings advert that has rocketed her in to the limelight.
ACCESS-FASHION heard the song, shared it on our blog and by the time we
clicked on the iTunes charts she was number 13 and has so far peaked at
number 3 (Official UK charts). The release of ‘Moonchild‘ was scheduled for 2012 but was brought forward to this week (November 21st 2011) due to demand.

Charlene is cute, quirky, sweet and
hilarious. At her album launch in London’s Bush Hall, her first
headline gig since the ‘Twinings’ moment, Charlene referred to herself
as, “Always the bridesmaid and never the bride,” at gigs. “Usually
I’m saying thanks for having me to an audience that would really like
me to hurry up and piss off so they can hear the act they’ve paid to
see… This time you’re here to see me and I don’t know what to say.
Thank you so much for coming down.” The event was sold out and yes
everyone was there to see Charlene Soraia – so here’s hoping she gets
used to it, as it’s all change from now.

She’s an artist who loves the sound of
music. An odd sentence it may seem with no reference to the Rodgers and
Hammerstein musical, but whilst shooting she told us, “I love analogue sound. That’s how I made my album. I like to create the sounds myself, nothing over compressed. Nothing fake.”
She took to the stage with four guitars, her amp, her pedals and her
voice. Her music is packed with sounds she creates so effortlessly,
elegantly and gracefully, one of the reasons we adore her. It’s clear
that she isn’t led by a team of people telling her how to speak or what
to speak about (one of the pros of coming from a small independent
record label perhaps?). But oh boy did she speak her mind, humming,
swearing and meowing her thoughts aloud to the audience between songs.
She’s a humorous soul with songs like ‘Bipolar,’ which has the line “I’m bipolar and nobody knows it but me.’ She talks the audience through a song titled, ‘Does she fake her cum face?’ No, we’re really not kidding… (You had to be there). But there’s nothing fake about the girl behind the humorous character and witty lyrics. Charlene Soraia’s Moonchild is beautiful body of work. Although female singer / songwriters seem in
abundance, few display the talent, charisma and character that we have
been introduced to.

I've been singing since before i could speak in full sentences. I would define my music as soul/pop.

Since 2009, you collaborate
with Morgan Wiley and Andrew Raposo and you are known as Jessica 6. Can
you say some words about this part of your life?

I love the beauty of collaboration.
This is what Jessika 6 represents to me. It's music that will only
exist when Andrew, Morgan and I get together and free ourselves in the
creative process.

The record "White Horse" is as much languishing as releasing. What is it talking about?

"White Horse" is about indulgence.
About feeling free by losing yourself in the night life and about the
strengh as well as consequence of those actions.

On the stage, videos, pictures...you always look sexy and enchantress. Is it an important face of nomi ruiz 's character? 

Definitely. It's also a part of who i
am outside my work. I love to exaggerate feminity. I feel empowered by
feminine energy and push that through sexuality and fashion.

A Jessica 6's album is in process...So can you reveal some of the aspects which will make the album's music?

The album is called "See The Light" and
is a journey through various flavors of pop music. It goes from dance
to r&b, new jack swing to soul and psychedelia. The lyrical content
is very personal to me. Like a diary of the past 2 years of my life.

Your appearances in Fun Girl
and White Horse 's video shot are really strange and mysterious. What
kind of environment would you like to express in next videos?

I would love to incorporate more dancing and choreography in the next video.

I have been in NYC last year...living just closed to the Brooklyn Museum. For you, what is the best place in NYC? 

I love the neighborhood i grew up in,
Sunset Park. It's the perfect place to go shopping for something sexy
then get some great latin food, walk through the park and enjoy a view
of the entire new York City skyline.

What is the best club for dancing?

Do u like contemporary art and performance art?

I love photography and video work as well as art installations.

Which artists do you love?

I am lucky to have many close friends
who are amazing artists such as Haluk Akakce, Antony Hegarty, Bianca
Cassidy, Alice O' Mally.

Which vocalists do you love?

I love Nina Simone, Donny Hathaway, Dusty Springfield, Ray LaMontagne, Adèle, Amy Winehouse.

You spent one year with Hercules and Love Affair. What could you tell us about this experience...

It was amazing being on so many stages and performing for so many people.

You already came to Paris as i
learnt watching a video of you on a bridge. Did you love your trip?
What do you think of the city?

It's such a beautiful city! I love
walking around at night when you can get lost in all the sexy neon
lights. Also has the best lingerie shopping as well as my favorite
dessert...the banana/nutella crêpe.

What about french music artists?

Les nubians.

Now, what is the next step?

More tourning. Playing bigger and better shows all time and always creating more music for the world.

Dazed Digital: You've worked with other Sweden-based artists
like José Gonzalez, does Gothenburg have a great density of musicians
per square metre?
Erik Bodin: Yeah, me and Yukimi used to play with him.
Yukimi Nagano: Percussion and background vocals. We were more like…
Erik Bodin: … Musical slaves (laughs)
Fredrik Källgren Wallin: In Gothenburg there's a lot of people making music, more than we know I guess.
Erik Bodin: It's kind of isolated. People don't really mingle.

DD: Would you say that your Swedish origins have influenced your music in anyway?
Yukimi Nagano: Maybe
in a very abstract deep hidden way. The music is all written here in
Gothenburg... So I would say it's more the Gothenburg origin that
spiced it the way it sound.

DD: Erik wears a The Radio Dept. cap, are you in touch with them?
Erik Bodin: Oh, Fredrik introduced them to us. He stole a sweater from them.
Fredrik Källgren Wallin: It wasn't like that (laughs). We were in the same apartment when living in Malmö, they were recording there.

DD: Arguably Ritual Union has been your most successful
album to date, how have you developed your sound from your last 2009
release?
Yukimi Nagano: It's
like a continuation from the other two but maybe more raw and simple.
Yukimi is a big part of the new sound. It's very vocally driven.
 
DD:
You’ve recently collaborated with SBTRKT on his latest album; How did
Wildfire come about and why did you think your combination was a good
fit?
Yukimi Nagano: We've
known about each other for quite a while now. He did a nice remix under
another name some years ago. When he reached out and sent some beats to
choose from we thought that the wildfire beat would be fun to play
with. And so we did.

DD: What was it like on the Gorillaz' world tour?
Yukimi Nagano: The experience of playing in those kind of spaces. That was just a
challenge for us. Of course, to be a part of that whole group of so
many artists that we admire and we're inspired by. Me and Fred we were
there as guests of part of the Gorillaz's show in the US part. It's
like a big town on the road.
Erik Bodin: We were playing ping-pong with Damon, he was playing his little game for every show, after sound check sometimes.

DD: A few of your songs have appeared on TV adverts, how do you feel about commercialising music?
Erik Bodin: “Fortune” was in a chocolate commercial in Sweden and also in the film
“The Kids are Alright”. Commercialising music for us sometimes is weird
in a way, but commercials is a way to spread the music.
Yukimi Nagano: It depends on what it is. There are things like McDonald's which is not
interesting. You have to look at it from many different perspectives. I
guess you can always do something else with the money you get from it.
Fredrik Källgren Wallin: Chocolate makes people happy. (laughs)

DD: Where will we see Little Dragon in the future?
Yukimi Nagano: Hopefully
in the studio making more music but before that it will be everywhere
from LA, Probably South America, Texas, Atlanta, New York, Glasgow,
Pukkelpop, Copenhagen and Sydney!

There was the guest spot on Gorillaz's Plastic Beach and a yet-to-be-heard studio session with Big Boi, among others, so it's no surprise that the group sounds so confident in "NightLight," the first single from the upcoming Ritual Union.

Little
Dragon makes pop music for folks who think they hate pop music, and one
important trick when attempting such a feat is to make the melody sound
more complex than it is. The hook in "NightLight" is carved out of a
couple of stiff keyboard chords, which don't quite fit together but
still fall neatly into place on the 4/4 beat. They might be the
unexpected visitors Yukimi Nagano sings about, the ones who are
"turning and twisting to form a line." Her lithe vocals sync up with
the song's electric undercurrent, providing the spark in a dance number
which might otherwise seem suited for a dilapidated disco hall.

The Skinny: As a rule, it's wise to pay attention to dragons of
pretty much any size or nationality, but this Little Dragon from Sweden
is especially significant. The group has made some noteworthy friends
while bubbling up in the past few years, among them Damon Albarn from
Gorillaz, Dave Sitek from TV on the Radio, and someone in the music
department at Grey's Anatomy, who liked Little Dragon enough to
use their breakout song "Twice." At the core of all that admiration is
an alternately propulsive and delicate sound dictated by strains of
electro and the striking vocal coo of Yukimi Nagano, none of which is

Comprised of former members of Hercules and Love Affair, New York City’s Jessica 6 has been commanding dance floors for years, globetrotting from London to Miami, San Francisco to Santiago, Bergen to Belgrade, seducing the dancing, sweaty masses with an electrifying blend of disco, soul and R&B.  In celebration of their debut album, See The Light (coming June 7 on Peacefrog) the band hits the road once again with their hypnotic live show, hitting NYC and Philadelphia, before heading West for a run that includes a stop at San Francisco’s Gay Pride stage.

 
See The Light opens with a classic-in-waiting, the behemoth of a single, “White Horse”, that forces you to move like a witch doctor would. “Champagne Bubbles” is the kind of gritty R&B that isn’t afraid to be as angry as it is melancholic, its piano flourishes punctuated with a heavy kick and snare. “Prisoner Of Love,” which bridges electro and freestyle, featuring a soaring vocal melody that finds Nomi and guest vocalist Antony weaving their voices around each other to a stunning effect. Little Dragon’s lead singer talks Prince, her bad temper, and baby-making music.

Swedish band Little Dragon is reportedly named after its petite
Swedish-Japanese lead singer Yukimi Nagano’s temper, and all of her
fire-breathing moods are on full display with their third record, Ritual Union,
out in July. Think ’80s vintage Prince at his horniest, fronted by
Björk, and you’ll get an idea of the band’s funked-up and odd sound.
Sticking to their all-synths, no-guitar policy, the record is sure to
be your sultry summer soundtrack. Or at least it’ll be the shit your girl plays to explain why she’s breaking up with you.

Do you even have ugly people in Sweden?
[Laughs.] I think everyone here is beautiful.

You’ve talked before about how Prince was a big influence. What do you make of him censoring all of his old dirty songs?
I have not really listened that much to his recent stuff. I didn’t know that he stopped singing those songs, actually.

He’s gone Jehovah, so he’s not allowed to talk about sex anymore.
I think that’s a shame.

What’s your favorite dirty Prince song?
I don’t know which songs are classified as really dirty ones, but I like “If I Was Your Girlfriend.”

So does the name of your band really come from your bad temper?
It’s
a funny way to put it, but it sort of came out that way. It was
something that the guys called me once in Sweden, and we liked it as a
band name. I have definitely had my fits in the studio.

Little Dragon’s music touches on a lot of different
emotions. What music would you put on in the bedroom when you’re trying
to set the mood?
Not Al Green, that’s too much of a cliché, but I’ll probably put on something strong and weird. Some Brian Eno.

Has anyone confessed to conceiving a baby to your music?
Not
necessarily confessed to that, but I have heard people say that their
girlfriend called them up and broke up with them and played “Twice.” I
have heard more of that, actually, than people making love.

You have blood on your hands!

José González is all too often done a disservice: his magnificent cover of The
Knife's "Heartbeats" launched him into the collective consciousness, and his
wondrous versions of songs from Massive Attack to Bruce Springsteen have
since captured the ears of many a casual listener. What's usually overlooked
is the musical brilliance of the man himself, but tonight, playing with
"maverick orchestra" the Gothenburg String Theory, it's never in doubt.

The orchestra, often the hallmark of overproduced, saccharine pseudo-pop
ballads, is a dangerous weapon in the musical arsenal. When incorporated
well, though, as it is tonight, it can be tremendous.

The Argentinian-Swedish folk songwriter and the GST have managed to conjure a
truly wonderful relationship. González's fragile vocals are counterbalanced
by his agile fingers, making his solo renditions of the pleading "Fold" and
absorbing "Hints" utterly beguiling. But it's when the GST emerge that the
show takes on another dimension.

Led by dynamic conductor Nackt, the intrepid orchestra embrace the unorthodox
– using plastic bags for percussion in "Far Away" – the contemporary and the
traditional, combining electronic background noises with luscious string
arrangements and insistent brass. They provide scope on "The Nest", and
match the vocal ebbs and swells of "Crosses" like musical shadows. The
performance of Kylie Minogue's "Hand on Your Heart" is breathtaking,
González's tremulous vocals and GST's rich orchestral texture uniting to
heartfelt effect.

The audience is rapt throughout, whether clapping their hands to the
triumphant climax of "Down the Line" or marvelling at the tear-inducing
wonder of "Heartbeats". Mixing spectral beauty with gifted musicianship,
this is a special partnership which isn't just impressive, it's progressive.
